The very first flags that were ever created over 4000 years ago were made of silk. This material is strong, but it is lightweight. It can withstand inclement weather and age, but yet it is not heavy to whomever would be carrying it. This made silk the ideal material for a flag in those days.

Modern flags are made of a variety of materials. The most commonly used materials are nylon, polyester, and cotton. Nylon is one of the most popular and economical material choices for making a flag. Nylon, like silk, is very lightweight. A large flag of this material wouldn’t weigh to much. Also a lightweight material lets the flag fly easily in a breeze. Nylon is also durable. Durability is very important for creating a flag because most times the flag will be flown outside no matter what the weather is like. Flags generally need to last a long time too. Nylon is also fast-drying and very versatile.

Polyester is another popular material choice for a flag. However, polyester is more ideal for an area with harsher weather conditions and heavier winds. Polyester is heavier and more durable than nylon so a flag made of it will last longer. Polyester is actually the most durable material that can be used to make a flag. Polyester flags can either be knitted or woven.

Cotton is another less popular material used in making flags. Cotton isn’t used as frequently because it isn’t as durable as silk, nylon, and polyester. Cotton flags are generally used for indoor purposes, but they can be used outdoors as well. Flags created with cotton have a more vibrant color which looks really great in indoor lighting. Cotton is also a more economical material choice than polyester.

Rayon is another material used to make miniature flags. Rayon is a silk-like material. It isn’t commonly used for large, outdoor flags. Rayon is used mainly for small, wall flags for indoors. Rayon has a shiny appearance making it more appropriate for indoor use.
